According to officials from the U.S. Department of the Interior, an agreement has been reached with TotalEnergies to end several offshore wind leases. In return, the company is expected to invest close to $1 billion into oil, natural gas, and liquefied natural gas projects in the United States.
The canceled wind projects include planned developments in regions such as the Carolina Long Bay and the New York Bight. The government will compensate the company for its earlier investments tied to those projects.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that the move supports more reliable and cost-effective energy production. He also expressed concerns about offshore wind projects, describing them as expensive and dependent on subsidies.
The new investment is expected to support energy infrastructure, including a liquefied natural gas facility in Texas, as well as expanded oil and gas production. Officials say the goal is to strengthen domestic energy supply and help stabilize costs for consumers.
